Well it has been by far one of the craziest trade deadlines of recent memory this year.
2 front line starters go to contenders in the same division.
2 bona fide superstars go to southern California.
2 sure fire hall of famers go to contenders.
July 7th the Brewers picked up the rent-a-pitcher of the year CC Sabathia for some prospects. At that time they were only a few games behind the cubs for first place and needed someone to pitch behind Ben Sheets. CC has pitched great and looks like he will be strong down the stretch run.
Not to be outdone on July 8th the Cubs picked up Rich Harden from the A's. This was obviously a reactionary move to the Brewers trade the day before. Harden can stand toe to toe with CC Sabathia all day long as long as he is healthy. Health seems to always the issue with Harden, if he can just stay healthy for the stretch run then this trade works out great for the cubs.
Next up were the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim Orange County next to the 205 in California. They picked up what seemed like the hottest prospect on the market Mark Teixeira. This trade puts a big bat in the angels line up to hit behind vlad. You will see the numbers of everyone in the line up go up with Tex in the lineup. The Angels didn't even have to give up an arm and a leg to get a hold of Tex. They also have a decent shot at signing him in the off season as a free agent. This was by far the best trade of the deadline deals.
Not to be shown up in there own market the Dodgers went out and made a huge splash in the 11th hour of the 31st of July. They pulled off a 3 team trade with the red sox and pirates to get Manny "manny being manny" Ramirez. This trade just doesn't make any sense to me at all. The redsox gave up Manny, 2 prospects, and 7 million dollars to get Jason Bay in return? Now I understand Jason Bay is a nice player, and Manny was unhappy in Boston, but how in the hell can you pull the trigger on this trade if you are Boston? From the dodgers stand point I understand that if Manny is out there you have to make a play for him, but you now have 5 solid outfielders on your roster. Who are you going to consistently sit every night? Do you sit down both the young kids Either and Kemp and hurt there confidence? Do you sit down Andruw Jones and pay him 20 million dollars a year to sit on the bench? The dodgers have already had clubhouse chemistry problems and I can't see this doing anything but make it worse. Maybe I am just skewed because I am a d-backs fan but I don't see this helping the dodgers as much as everyone thinks.
In order to try and put themselves over the top in the AL central the White Sox picked up the Kid, Ken Griffey Jr. Once again the White Sox kind of picked up a player that over fills the roster. Will Griffey play center field again? Can the 38 year old Griffey still play center? If he can't then do you sit Jim Thome? Do you sit Paul Konerko? Once again seems like it may shake up the clubhouse. Thankfully for the White Sox Griffey isn't exactly the clubhouse cancer that Manny is.
Finally not to be completely outdone the Yankees couldn't let a trade deadline go by without making a move. The picked up a playoff tested Pudge Rodriguez. With Posada out for the rest of the season the yanks needed an all star to fill the position, because god forbid they don't have an all star at every position. This sure makes them look better to challenge for the AL east title and AL wild card.
All in all it was a crazy few days.
